As far as all the legends and myths say, gods may be immortal and eternal, but they are not without faults. Some of them have flaws, others can be killed, and all of them seem to be pretty close to humans when it comes to the array of emotions they can go through. Hence, it should be no wonder that they can make mistakes, or even recur to mindless violence from time to time.

Sacrifice is a role-playing game with heavy strategy elements thrown into the mix and a story that takes place in a very weird dimension, although somewhat inspired by ancient mythology and old legends. Regardless of where the action happens, the game is pretty unique from multiple points of view, but especially when it comes to gameplay and the mechanics behind it.

The plot revolves around a war between five powerful gods, in a world where the creator god was defeated and the entire universe went into a downward spiral plagued by conflict and anger. You play the role of a wizard, who comes from a different dimension and must choose to side with one of the five gods, in order to end the war once and for all.

While the game is  a blend of RPG and RTS, you play it from a third-person perspective, which might seem weird at a first glance. In fact, it keeps being weird even after you get accustomed to it, but the mechanics work and it shouldn’t be too much of a bother. Your character can cast a variety of spells, which vary depending on the god you have chosen to support, but it is also capable of giving orders to other units and sacrifice the souls of the fallen enemies in order to gain more troops.

Naturally, all of these mechanics combined can result in a few problems with the interface, because all of it must fit on the screen. Ingenious design made it possible though, so you shouldn’t get tangled in the HUD too much. The camera is a bit tricky to handle properly, on the other hand, but you can learn to manage it with enough practice.

When it’s all said and done, Sacrifice took a lot of chances and it gambled on some risky elements, but it panned out in the end. Thus, if you are interested in something rather weird, but immensely fun and memorable, this may very well be the game you were looking for.
