The hack-and-slash RPG genre owes a great deal of its overall success to games like Dungeon Master, The Bard’s Tale, as well as Diablo later on. The niche evolved steadily over the years and it got more and more refined as well, only to blossom into the legendary Diablo 2, which is now considered the standard when the subject comes up. However, there were many other franchises that kept a decent fan base, some of which are still around even today.
Sacred 2: Fallen Angel has quite the reputation to uphold, considering the fact that its predecessor managed to rise pretty high up in the ranks and be regarded as one of the cornerstones in the action-RPG genre. Fortunately, the developers have done their homework and they managed to recreate the same atmosphere, while also keeping the mechanics as addictive as they always were and the story intriguing enough to be worth at least one playthrough.
Speaking of which, the plot takes place in Ancaria and it obviously talks about a darkness that’s about to engulf the land, in the form of a great evil that wants to mutate and kill every creature in its path. A hero is needed - someone who can go against the dark forces and defeat them once and for all, while also receiving the eternal gratitude and consideration of every living thing in the realm.
The story is dull and linear, though, but that’s obviously not your first concern in a hack-and-slash. As it is well known, the loot is what matters, as well as the ability to play for hours without fearing the end credits screen. Thankfully, Sacred 2 includes plenty of that, especially when it comes to monsters, items and the size of the world, the latter of which can leave you in awe once you discover that you are free to go anywhere from the first few minutes of gameplay.
There are multiple classes to choose from and two different campaigns, so that you can play both with the Light and the Darkness forces. The gimmick is cute, but it’s not very revolutionary and it doesn’t have the intended effect, because the story is not that intriguing to be worth a second explanation. However, new items, skills and characters are available when you switch, which is obviously a powerful incentive.
To conclude with, Sacred 2: Fallen Angel is big, pretty and very fast-paced, which is exactly what a die hard hack-and-slash fan would want from such a release. You can play with many characters, see plenty of skill combinations and collect countless armor sets along the way, which makes multiple playthroughs almost imperative.
