If you give credence to the stories regarding aliens visiting Earth, then you are probably aware of their supposed habit involving the analysis and examination of human subjects onboard their spaceships. In a nutshell, it’s not the kind of situation you want to find yourself in, because the tests are not always gentle and it’s not just your blood they are after.
Ryan Starr is Abducted is a colorful puzzle game that fortunately does not feature any kind of probe or test, but you do have to watch out for the aliens that stand guard. Your goal is to override the security system and return home, but that is easier said than done, considering the fact that you have to use your wits and quick reflexes in order to escape.
The annoying thing is that the game does not give you too many clues about what you should be doing, except that you have to activate some kind of machine after you remove the security measures. But what exactly are the tools you can use and how to go about deactivating the shields, there’s no information anywhere. As it turns out, you have to use the monkey on your back to achieve your goal, by throwing it into the enemies in a particular order.
The game also allows you to use a special aim mode in order to increase your accuracy, because it’s basically a first-person view with a crosshair you can freely position on the desired target. Unfortunately, the aliens have a very simple and predictable pattern, which means that you can just sit in one place and wait for the next enemy to enter your sights once every few seconds, with no need to aim at all.
Visually, the game does not impress at all when it comes to shaders or the quality of the 3D models, but it looks pretty well for a casual production aimed at children. The animations are a tad too repetitive and stiff while the environments are too tight and restrictive, but nothing looks too awful either. The same can be said about the soundtrack, which is not impressive in any way, but it keeps your ears occupied.
All things considered, Ryan Starr is Abducted is not a top-notch production, but it can still pass as a pretty fun experience if you’ve got nothing better to do. However, the sketchy gameplay mechanics and the lack of a proper introduction might make it a no-go for many people that try it.
