Ruby Hunter is an interesting puzzle game in which you have to collect all the gems from the levels while avoiding enemies and traps at the same time. You can only move in two dimensions, which means that you have to think outside the box to see some of the solutions. Although it starts off pretty slowly, the game is actually quite demanding, especially during the later levels.

As such, your main goal is to reach the exit door, but not before opening it by collecting all the colorful gems. Sometimes there’s no other threat than the ground itself, because it can fall on you if you mine beneath the rocks, but other times there are traps and enemies to avoid too. Running away is an option, but you also get bombs and weapons that can be used later on.

There are many tutorial levels to get you started as well, each one of which exemplifies a particular element you will be faced with during the game. You learn that some bugs contain the gems you are looking for, carts move while sticking to walls, as well as a variety of other mechanics that come into play throughout the game. However, you are always free to skip ahead and play whichever level you wish.

Speaking of which, the full game contains an awful lot of stages, mainly because it also includes fan-created content. Not only that, but there’s an editor bundled with the game too, which means that you can create your very own adventures if you wish to do so. As for the graphics, they are as basic as they can get in the genre, which is not a bad thing at all.

Ruby Hunter is not an original concept, but it brings together the most beloved elements from many other similar games. Thus, if you are a fan of classics like Boulder Dash or Sapphire Yours, then Ruby Hunter should provide you with many hours of entertainment.
