Challenging games usually fascinate gamers because they require dedication in order to be played properly, regardless of whether it’s because you need good reflexes or an agile mind. However, the difficulty level is designed not to be unfair, because no one likes to struggle just because the developers decided not to include any instructions or they don’t provide the players with the necessary tools.

Rome Defenders: The First Wave is a casual tower defense game in which your goal is to stop various monsters from reaching your base. In order to do so, you have to build towers with special abilities that deal damage or have various other effects on the monsters. However, it must be mentioned right off the bat that the whole formula is very badly designed and quite frustrating.

To begin with, the tutorial is intrusive and buggy, given the fact that the hints have a tendency to remain on the screen for the entire duration of the level and occupy a good portion of it without allowing you to close them. On top of that, the difficulty level is chaotic and very unfair most of the time, since you either build exactly the right combination of towers, or you lose.

Each tower can be upgraded a number of times in order to increase its damage, and there are multiple types of towers as well. Hence, some of them are good against fast enemies, while others are terrible when it comes to flying enemies. You are required to have all of them at once, on the other hand, because each wave features a different kind of enemy. Naturally, you need gold to afford this, and even the tiniest mistake can cost you the whole round if you forget to buy or upgrade a certain tower.

The frustration is far too great for a supposedly casual game, but the worst of all is that it’s very unfair to the player. To make things worse, the graphics are nothing to get excited about either, since the resolution is pretty poor and you cannot zoom in or rotate the camera. Thus, you can barely tell which enemy is which sometimes.

In the end, Rome Defenders: The First Wave is a bit too rough to be enjoyable now, especially for casual players. Hence, the game is frustrating and annoying most of the time, not to mention buggy and inconsistent.
