Rise of Ages Demo

Many have tried to emulate Minecraft’s success, mainly because Minecraft approaches such a broad subject, and it’s quite easy to add or remove things from the formula in order to obtain something relatively new. However, few have managed to gain the same popularity as Mojang’s bestseller, mainly because they lack the diversity and the complexity of the original.

Rise of Ages is a sandbox game akin to both Terraria and Minecraft, in which your goal is to build a civilization and help it evolve over the centuries using technology and a larger population. While the underlying mechanics are very similar to the ones present in the aforementioned games, Rise of Ages is a bit different in many ways, especially when it comes to how you approach the whole survival thing.

In essence, it’s very important to stay clothed and hydrated in certain biomes, because your character is not as resistant as you might believe. In fact, he or she can get sick if you forget to take proper care when it comes to food and shelter, not to mention all the wild animals that might attack. Other than that, the rest of the game is about gathering resources and putting them together using the crafting menu.

Besides the fact that you can cut trees and mine rocks and various other materials, it’s also possible to take on agriculture and cultivate the plants you need. As you manage to raise more advanced structures, more people are going to join your settlement, and your civilization advances. In fact, you can reach the space age with enough effort and dedication, which makes the adventure quite intriguing.

Combat is part of the gameplay as well, although it is rather basic, since all you have to do is click. Wars are possible too, at least if you do not want to settle things peacefully with nearby settlements. As for the graphics, they are pretty colorful and detailed, especially when you consider the fact that there are all sorts of textures and tiles, not to mention the backgrounds that change depending on the biome.

In the end, Rise of Ages is clearly on the right path, it just needs more polishing when it comes to controls and gameplay mechanics.
