Radiation is the golden ticket of most sci-fi stories that involve mutants and monsters, because it allows the writers to come up with many interesting ideas. Obviously, actual radiation has no beneficial effects on the human body, since the things it changes are anything but better afterward. It’s an easy plot mechanism, on the other hand, so it’s used as often as possible in books and video games.
Ricks Hunter is a 2D action-adventure game with fast-paced gameplay and a lot of combat that involves monsters of all kinds. Your goal is to finish every level by getting to the end alive, although a few puzzles may keep you busy every now and again. There are role-playing elements as well, which means that your character gets stronger throughout the adventure.
The story is not the brightest out there, but it gets the job done if you lower your expectations. In short, the world is recovering after an asteroid exploded and radiated every creature in the blast zone. These creatures are called Ricks, and you play one such Rick called Foux, who’s on a mission to change the world and kill all the monsters that try to take over.
Your character has a few special moves that help him along, such as sword attacks, dashes, and a few interesting moves that allow him to deal more damage than usual. On top of that, you can also take pets with you during the missions, and they also get stronger. There are three different classes these pets can go through, and they obviously get stronger along the way.
The graphics are fairly simple as well, sometimes too much so. Most of the levels are very similar and basic, making the experience repetitive and annoying sometimes. You can ignore this fact by concentrating on the combat, but sometimes there’s nothing to do but look at the disappointing landscapes. Granted, at least the sound effects are decent, so they might take your mind off things.
All things considered, Ricks Hunter can easily be enjoyable for a while, but the lack of variety in the levels and the poor story causes boredom from early on. Thus, it all depends on your ability to remain patient and accept the fact that this is not a memorable game.
