One of the better things modern technology has facilitated is the fact that basically anyone can have a go at creating their dream video game, regardless of any previous experience with a coding language. You can simply drag-and-drop assets nowadays and easily create something that would have taken programmers from the past a few weeks to put together, which is both nice and a bit frightening.
You can pretty much smell the inexperience from a mile away in the case of Resurgence Raging Next Level, because it only takes a look at the title to figure out what’s in store for you. The actual game is a bit worse, unfortunately, and one can struggle for a very long time to find an element that’s not awful in every regard. But, this is most likely a first attempt, which means that there’s a good chance the developer will get better at it over time.
The game is a first-person shooter and it pretty much plays like one, except that in a much more cumbersome and annoying way. You can choose between a pistol and a machine gun, but given the fact that the enemy soldiers have skin made of Mithril and Adamantium, it doesn’t really matter what you use, because you’ll need more than a clip to put one down.
It is actually almost impossible to pass the first level, mostly due to the fact that the enemy soldiers come in huge numbers and there is no path you can follow that allows you to tackle them individually. As if that wasn’t enough, some of them also spawn in random places that you’ve already cleared, which is both frustrating and annoying. Most of the enemies just sit and wait for you, even if they have a clear line of sight and you are practically gunning down their comrades ten feet away.
Although the game was developed using Unity, the sheer amount of assets and post-processing effects make it impossible to run it with more than 5-10FPS, regardless of what monster you happen to play it on. As such, besides all of the already mentioned issues, you also have to deal with extremely low framerates and somehow not give up.
All things being equal, Resurgence Raging Next Level is a bad game and it probably won’t get any better unless everything is scratched and remade from the ground up. However, that’s how you get better at something, because no one got it right from the first go and there’s plenty of time to learn.
