Certain movies manage to gain a cult following over the years, even if they do not feature huge budgets or a stellar cast. Some directors managed to rise to fame thanks to such movies, including one of the biggest names in the industry at the moment, Quentin Tarantino. His breakthrough movie was Reservoir Dogs, and it inspired counted flicks since them.
Reservoir Dogs: Bloody Days is a top-down shooter with plenty of gore and just enough strategy to keep you on edge at all times. Even if you have to do a lot of shooting most of the time, it’s important to remember that tactics are important as well. Each mission is unique in terms of layout and objectives, but the mechanics rarely change, which is a good thing. The core mechanic of the game is being able to rewind time, but it’s not what you would expect. Hence, you start as one character and play up until a certain point, and then you can press a button and go back to a previous checkpoint and play with another character. This opens up a lot of interesting possibilities, although it can obviously be a bit confusing.
The top-down perspective can be a tad impersonal at times, especially since you are constantly assaulted by enemies from every direction. You can pick up a variety of guns and melee weapons along the way, depending on your style. Every mission takes place in a different location, which means that you have to learn every new environment before you are able to survive and complete the missions. Speaking of which, you have to be prepared for a lot of gore, especially when it comes to blood. Every kill sends waves of blood across the room, and using bigger weapons increases the gore levels significantly. The graphics are not bad either, even if you are forced to watch everything from a top-down perspective, and the soundtrack helps a lot as well.
In spite of the fact that it doesn’t feature the actual characters from the movie, Reservoir Dogs: Bloody Days is still a very entertaining action game, not to mention challenging. Hence, it’s a great spin on the idea, at least if you can get used to the weird time control mechanics.
