Cemeteries are not places you want to visit for fun, especially not at night. However, they are obviously not full of ghosts and zombies, they just look creepy when you think about all the dead bodies buried under the ground. On top of that, you also have all those horror movies to thank for the scary images in your mind over the years.
Redemption Cemetery: At Death's Door is a hidden object adventure game in which you have to investigate a mysterious cemetery and figure out how to dispel the evil spirits residing there. Although the gameplay mechanics are more or less the same as in every other game in the genre, the puzzles and the mini-games you have to take seem to be a tad more original and intriguing than usual.
As for the story, it all starts when the main character gets into a cab. When the taxi gets near the cemetery, something happens and the car ends up in a ditch, with the main character escaping at the last moment. There’s something calling you toward the graveyard, on the other hand, and you end up helping a few spirits get rid of an evil power, which is no small task for a single person.
Most of your time is spent examining the environment for useful objects and ways to advance the story. Hence, whether you need to find keys or various other items to unlock the way forward, the gimmick gets slightly repetitive after a while. Thankfully, at least the mini-games are much more exciting than usual, since you really have to put some effort into them in order to get them right, especially on the higher difficulty levels.
The graphics are actually quite impressive, even if most of the environments are just hand-drawn pictures with a layer or particle effects on top and a bit of post-processing. However, you can also enjoy a few decent cutscenes, and the characters are very well-designed for a change. The same goes for the soundtrack and the sound effects, which help a lot with the atmosphere.
While it may not be as comprehensive as a hardcore adventure game, Redemption Cemetery: At Death's Door is still a pretty solid experience. On top of that, it’s quite simple to approach by any kind of gamer, experienced or not.
