Interactive stories are pretty popular nowadays, especially if they feature a bit of interesting artwork and the possibility to choose your own path throughout the plot. However, the genre is about as old as it gets, given the fact that some of the first video games out there were text-based adventures that forced you to push your imagination to the limit.

  Raise Your Own Clone is a text-based role-playing game that allows you to be in complete control of the story and the main character, as well as choose from multiple routes to follow along the way. The goal is to help your alter-ego make it through a variety of interesting situations, as well as explore the intriguing world created by the writers, where everything is connected somehow.   The demo contains only one of the characters and his or her story, but more is promised in the full version. Hence, you play as a gambling addict who receives an inheritance from his late uncle, and it’s your job to decide what to do with all the cash. Whether you manage to turn the inheritance into a fortune or lose it all by gambling again, it’s all up to the decisions you make along the way.

It’s worth noting that there’s quite a bit of text to read before and after every choice you make, so it might not be as exciting as you think when you imagine a role-playing game. On the other hand, it’s a lot like enjoying a book, so it shouldn’t be a problem if you do not mind letting your imagination do everything. Even so, it can a bit frustrating to never see the world described by the story.   Every scene usually features multiple choices, and the story evolves depending on which one you pick. Sometimes the differences are not that great, but every now and again your decision can actually put an end to the whole thing in a matter of minutes. It’s easy to play through the game again, on the other hand, especially since you can also change a few things about the character beforehand.

In the end, Raise Your Own Clone is clearly not for everyone, and it could also use a prettier interface, or at least a cleaner one. However, it’s the story that matters the most in these cases, so it all depends on whether you enjoy the characters and the evolution of the plot.
