Old ideas can be rehashed every now and again, especially if they are slightly changed to accommodate modern audiences. Hence, this is why movie reboots manage to make a lot of money at the box office, and the same can be said about video games. On the other hand, it’s also great if the developers just take a classic concept and integrate into an original formula.

Raining Blobs is an arcade game that combines Tetris with match-three mechanics and cute anime girls. Although it looks fairly simple at first, the game actually packs a lot of content, including co-op and versus modes, not to mention the endless mode that allows you to keep playing until your hands give out. Hence, there are more than enough reasons to come back to the game many times.

To begin with, the actual mechanics revolve around falling blocks that feature two tiles, often of different color. The goal is to match the said tiles by carefully placing them on near the other, although in order to be cleared you have to wait for tiles with a golden star on them. This adds some extra difficulty to the formula, which is always great if you enjoy a challenge.

As mentioned before, there are both co-op and versus modes that allow you to play with other people or with the AI. Up to eight players can work together or compete at the same time, and the number extends to 16 if you decide to play with the computer instead. Naturally, gamepads are highly recommended, especially since the keyboard controls are a bit awkward and slow for this type of game.

It’s also worth noting that you can play in tournaments and win a place on the leaderboard if you get enough points, which is great if you are a competitive gamer. As far as the graphics are concerned, the retro style is very clean and enjoyable, not to mention the fact that there are always cute anime girls on the screen to keep you relaxed and happy.

In the end, Raining Blobs probably won’t appeal to everyone, but it’s definitely a hit in its specific niche, especially since it packs so much content. The fact that it features leaderboards and an endless mode should keep you busy for quite some time.
