Cute animals make for great characters in cartoons and video games, especially if they are targeted at a casual audience. However, even hardcore gamers can have a blast with a simple adventure every now and again, especially if the mechanics are addictive. Good level design is important as well, even more so if the focus is on exploration and a cozy atmosphere.
Rabbit Story is a top-down adventure game with colorful graphics and a wonderful world for you to explore while solving a few simple puzzles and dealing with a handful of mini-games. Although the experience as a whole looks pretty childish and simple, the underlying idea is pretty serious and sad, given the fact that it centers on the complex relationships between individuals.
You play the role of Rabbit, a white bundle of fur that goes on a journey in order to deal with the fact that he forgot about his friend’s birthday, who left after the whole ordeal. A few other characters join Rabbit along the way, and they help him get over this difficult moment and maybe sort things out with Kitty, his friend. There are plenty of parallels with the real world, especially if you can relate to the situation.
The whole thing is controlled using the mouse alone, so it shouldn’t be difficult to start playing, regardless of your experience with top-down adventure games. All you have to do is click on the ground and watch the rabbit move from one place to the other, although the mini-games are a tad more challenging. Every now and again you also have to pick up items or watch a short cutscene.
Speaking of which, the graphics are very polished and enjoyable, especially when it comes to level design. The artists managed to create a very colorful and cozy world, full of green and serene landscapes that make you forget about your trouble. The top-down perspective limits your ability to look around as you wish, given the fact that there’s no zoom option, but that’s not a huge problem.
In the end, it’s obvious that the people behind Rabbit Story are very talented and eager to create things, but this is just a short demo with very little content at the moment. Hence, we can only hope that they keep doing a good job until the project is completed.
