Simple puzzles games can be just as effective when it comes to keeping you busy and helping you develop your critical thinking, even if they do not feature complex gameplay mechanics and intricate background stories. However, the most important thing of all is for the gameplay mechanics to be as smooth as possible, because frustration can ruin the experience in a rush.
RTB: Roll That Ball is a puzzle game in which you have to move a ball through a variety of traps and make sure it reaches the other side intact, while also keeping an eye on your robot at the same time. It’s not a very complex formula, but then again it doesn’t have to be as long as you are having fun and you get to put your brain to work for a little while.
In essence, each level features a handful of obstacles you must overcome, but the only thing you can actually do is push the ball around. Thus, it’s important that you synchronize your movement with the obstacles, because most of them are designed to disorient you this way. However, the mechanics get trickier later on, mainly because more types of traps make an appearance.
The most annoying thing about RTB: Roll That Ball is the fact that the levels get repetitive after a while, which is mostly because the designers ran out of ideas way too early. Thus, you see everything there is to see after five levels or so, after which the only thing that changes is that even more spikes and saw blades make an appearance. A bit more diversity would go a long way, so we can only hope this is going to be fixed in the full release.
As for the graphics, you shouldn’t expect anything too groundbreaking, but then again the genre is not about graphics anyway. Even so, the overall look is not that bad, at least if you do not mind the complete lack of textures and poor shading techniques. Other than that, the controls are responsive and accurate, and the sound effects are decent as well.
In the end, RTB: Roll That Ball could easily evolve into something much better with enough work and dedication, but at the moment it’s a bit rough and repetitive. However, there’s definitely time to turn things around and make the game a lot more attractive and enjoyable.
