Coding is a lot more accessible nowadays, especially when it comes to the tools that are available for everyone to create apps, websites or video games. In fact, the programming languages themselves have been simplified over the years, especially when you take a look at Python or C# and see how natural everything sounds in terms of syntax.

ROBOT MASTER is an intriguing puzzle game in which you get to see what it takes to program an AI and utilize it to solve puzzles indirectly. Don’t expect to write actual code, given the fact that everything is simplified to be as fun as possible, but you can actually learn a few things about coding. The riddles also put your mind to work and demand a bit of creativity on your behalf.

To begin with, your main task is to write instructions for a robot as it tries to explore a maze, find the exit, or simply kill the enemies it encounters along the way. Instead of actually writing them, however, you have to select them from lists and connect them in the right order, which is a tad easier. Even so, it takes a bit of concentration and analytical thinking to get the instructions right, especially when the levels become more complex.

Although things start out pretty simple at first, the levels get more demanding later on, especially when enemies make an appearance. Hence, it’s important to include conditions that tell your robot what to do when it stumbles upon an enemy. Whether you instruct it to retreat, stand its ground or attack on sight, the whole thing is up to you, although it seems like there are levels that require a specific approach.

Lastly, the graphics are kept fairly modest, especially in terms of level design and animations. However, the colors are clean and the interface is neatly designed, especially since most of the time half of the screen is occupied by the instructions panel. Because the focus is on the gameplay aspect, on the other hand, it’s a lot easier to ignore the visual component.

ROBOT MASTER may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it can be a great way to get into programming in a fun and challenging way. However, the game pace is a bit slow for many modern gamers, not to mention the fact that not having direct control over the robots is a bit of a bummer.
