Quyrium Demo

Most shoot'em up games (also called shmup) usually take the player through a nice and steady learning curve, so that it’s easier for new users to pick up the gameplay. Not with Quyrium, which just shows new players which are the buttons to move the ship and to shoot. You are plunged into the action as if you have been playing this for the past few hours.

The game is developed by a studio named Virtual Dropkick, and the devs have expressed an interest in making a game that’s tough. They think that the satisfaction of playing challenging games is not just nostalgia and that they can bring back that feeling.

Since the game has the name Quyrium, you might think that there is a story behind it, and you wouldn’t be wrong. Humans finally find a planet that looks habitable, but it turns out that a mineral found there makes life impossible. The mineral was named Quyrium and the planet Quyrion.

Following a world war, Earth discovered that it’s not alone in the galaxy after an unknown race attacks Quyrion. This is where the player comes in, and he’s thrust right into the middle of the action.

Quyrium plays like any other kind of shoot'em up, meaning that you can get better weapons from upgrades, you collect a ton of minerals from the enemy, and levels usually end with a boss fight.

What makes the game different is the level of difficulty which is off the charts. The enemy is shooting with dozens of projectiles at once, and it’s hard to keep track of everything that's happening of the screen.

Quyrium is built with the Unity Engine, the Personal Edition, which means that it’s not all that bad, but it doesn't look really good either. It falls somewhere in between. Since this is only early work, we can only hope that it’s going to get better in time.

For now, it’s a rather average shoot'em up, and the insane difficulty is the only thing that’s got working for it.
