Good stories usually portray the struggle between two forces, such as good and evil. In most cases, video games only allow you to play on the side of good, thus leaving you unable to hear the villain’s explanation for the dreadful things he’s doing. Not anymore, though, because the game at hand puts you in the shoes of an awful man, and it provides you with the chance to be the rudest person in the room for a change.
Quest for Infamy is a point-and-click adventure game with a retro feel and look, which aims to recreate the atmosphere from titles like Quest for Glory and the like. In fact, many of its elements are borrowed from the said game series, although originality is not absent either. Hence, your primary purpose is to solve puzzles and advance the story by any means necessary, while watching your character evolve along the way.
Speaking of which, you get to play as Roehm, a brave, but not so fair hero who’s running from his past in an attempt to start a new life. He is unable to let go of his old habits, on the other hand, which means that you’ll often engage in shady behavior, such as stealing and lying. It’s all in the name of fun, however, because the entire plot is hilarious and full of memorable characters that make the experience enjoyable.
There are three character classes you can choose from in the beginning: Rogue, Brigand and Sorcerer, all of which have different gameplay styles and even different quests. The skills they possess also come in handy in various situations, because you’ll sometimes have to fight your way out of a jam. However, most of the gameplay revolves around puzzles and the conversations you have with the town folk to achieve your goals.
As previously mentioned, the game is designed to look retro, which is mostly obvious when it comes to the graphics. Each location is hand-drawn and you can clearly see that a lot of effort went into the environments, which are highly detailed. Sure, the animations may be simple and the single pixels may occupy large portions of the screen, but that only serves as a way to take you back to a time when video games were not all about flashy graphics.
All things considered, Quest for Infamy does a good job when it comes to reminding gamers about a simpler time in the video games industry. As such, if you all you desire is a good story and well-written dialog to keep you entertained, this is definitely one of the better choices you can make at the moment.
