Psycho Starship Rampage, a game title that tells you a bit about the things that are about to come. Pilot a starship and kill everything in your path without the slightest flinch of emotion.
Psycho Starship Rampage is a lot of things, a blend of old and new that comes together to create something really interesting and fun promising. At its core, it’s an arcade side scrolling space shooter that has you battling waves of enemy ships until you reach the end-level boss, which, of course, is huge and puts your weapons system to shame.
What’s out of the box and neatly used is the possibility to design your ship anyway you see fit using an array of sections and equipment. The only guideline for how it should look is that which is given by your own imagination and sense what kills everything fast and in an efficient way. You get over a dozen ship sections to combine and then strategically fill with weapons, defense systems, flight gear and miscellaneous devices.
Rotate ship segments and weapons is something you can easily do but since this is a sidescroller, rotating the ship itself is not doable. Enemy fighters will have the ability to turn around, flank you, and run around pointing their guns at you until they kill you or you them. In the spirit of good horizontal side scrolling shooters, you’ll need great reflexes in dodging enemy fire, which will be plentiful.
It might seem unfair and maybe a bit frustrating in dealing with the (apparent) limited mobility but you can hack enemy ships to steal new tech and use it for yourself. This will allow you to add shields, better weapons and eventually you will have enough stuff to decide whether you want a slow but tanky warship that vaporizes anything or a small and agile fighter with very powerful weapons.
Psycho Starship Rampage might have a slow start, but after you deal with that thing called permadeath, and get a handle on how things work, it quickly becomes fun and entertaining while never cutting back on the difficulty.
All-in-all, Psycho Starship Rampage is in its Alpha stages and there is a lot of room for improvement. Nonetheless, what this demo offers is a solid design with well implemented mechanics that mostly require a bit of polishing.
