Since it is common knowledge by now, surviving a zombie apocalypse can be achieved if you follow a few rules, although it certainly won’t be easy. Plenty of video games, movies and TV shows made a lot of money with this idea, however, which is why such projects always get a lot of attention from the public, even if they are sometimes of subpar quality in some aspects.

Project Zomboid is an indie production that takes a stab at the subject, but from an entirely different angle. Rather that put a lot of guns in your hands and stick you in a first-person perspective, the game is actually a top-down isometric RPG, with some stealth elements and plenty of action as well. The combination of genres is weird indeed, but regardless of your thoughts, the result is definitely something you’ll want to try out for yourself.

Moreover, the entire game world is a sandbox and there are no linear narratives holding you into place. You may start into a small house that’s rather easy to defend, but circumstances can change and you find yourself looking for shelter in other buildings, or just to explore some more. Barricading your safehouse is vital, however, since you simply cannot fight all the zombies that come for your once the night comes.

There are plenty of gameplay choices to keep you occupied along the way, depending on how you want to experience the adventure. It is possible to cook meals and try to live a semi-normal life when you are not chopping zombie heads off, but it is also possible to drink bleach and commit suicide when things get too difficult. As a side note, you can get bit by the infected ones and turn into one yourself, although the process takes a while and it gives you some time to put your affairs in order.

The entire journey can be enjoyed with a friend in co-op mode, which is definitely a lot more fun and entertaining. Helping each other survive is tons of fun, not to mention the many interesting stories that can arise from the experience. Thus, despite the isometric graphics and the rather simple overall idea, the game is definitely more complex that it appears at a first glance.

Although it tries to blend humor with realism, Project Zomboid came out as an incredibly well-polished gem, which makes it a must try for every survival fans out there. The co-op option is definitely the icing on the cake, since it gives the game a much higher replayability value.
