Take advantage of powerful alien technology in order to harvest energy and use it to build powerful armies. #Real-time strategy #Strategy game #Harvest energy #Strategy #RTS #Tactics
Strategy games have a tendency to become repetitive after a while, because there are only so many successful tactics you can apply in order to be victorious. Naturally, some games manage to avoid this by providing the players with a generous selection of units and abilities, which make it very difficult for two matches to turn out the same way.
Perimeter is a unique real-time strategy game that although may look pretty classic and straightforward at a first glance, it can turn out to be extremely versatile and unpredictable. Not only that, but there are a variety of useful tools at your disposal that allow you to change the pace of the game in the blink of an eye, depending on what your intentions happen to be.
Story-wise, the main campaign talks about the dispute between three factions, each one of which comes with a different set of abilities and technological orientation. As such, you can either play with the Empire, the Harckback, or the Exodus. The last ones are actually descendants of the humans from Earth, who are actively looking for another home after the planet become uninhabitable.
One of the most innovative components of the game is the ability to terraform the environment and use it to your advantage, in order to make things more difficult for the enemy. The other interesting gimmick is the fact that you can also extract energy from the ground and form a grid to transport it around the map, to keep your buildings and units powered. As such, dealing with the energy problem is a big part of the gameplay, especially since your buildings can be captured if they stop being powered.
Given the fact that you are free to mold the terrain as you see fit, the graphics engine needed to be robust and versatile, which it is. Not only that, but it looks good as well, especially when you consider the amount of detail that can be admired in the alien structures you build. A futuristic soundtrack plays in the background, which completes the atmosphere.
All things considered, Perimeter turned out to be quite the successful experiment, since it encompasses all the right elements to be classified as a good strategy game. Hence, if you are a fan of the genre and you are up for something different, this can very well be the title to provide it for you.
