People usually get pets in order to avoid feeling lonely, although it’s quite the commitment to take care of another living thing. Besides keeping them sheltered and fed, you also have to train them and play with them as often as possible, unless they are always grumpy for some reason. They also have to be kept healthy, which means good food and regular visits to the vet.
Paws & Effect: My Dogs Are Human! is a kinetic visual novel in which you get to witness the story of a girl whose dogs suddenly turn to humans, and she has to deal with the consequences. Although the demo at hand features no options or multiple dialog choices, the final game is supposed to be more interactive, which is good news if you want something with more replayability.
In short, it all starts when the main character decides to watch a movie with two her two dogs. Her name is Charlie Young, but you can actually change the first name to whatever you wish, making the experience a tad more personal. The dogs turn to human in the blink of an eye, and it’s up to Charlie to take care of them and teach them how to behave like regular people before her birthday party comes up.
The story is not at all mature or serious in any way, and there are a few grammar mistakes every now and again as well. Everything is a bit too forced when it comes to how the characters interact and how Charlie handles each situation, which makes the experience feel cheap and even childish every now and again. On the other hand, maybe the whole point of the game is to show you cute things and nothing more.
Speaking of which, the artwork is quite good, especially when it comes to character design and their facial expressions. There are only a handful of characters, on the other hand, at least in the demo, so you don’t get to enjoy this part very much. As for the backgrounds, they are quite detailed and well-designed, but don’t expect anything too great either.
All things considered, Paws & Effect: My Dogs Are Human! can be pretty fun and engaging if you are a bit younger, but then again the game contains some mild nudity, so it’s clearly not designed for children. Hence, you need to be prepared to deal with silly writing and a very basic plot.
