Being evil is somewhat permitted in most role-playing games, especially in those that use the D&D set of rules, since they allow you to create a character that tends not to abide the law and always be on the lookout for the nearest evil deed that can be enjoyed. However, the main storyline is almost exclusively on the good side, since the end goal is always for the gang of adventurers to stop the great evil that threatens to destroy the world and subjugate the realm.
Overlord 2 continues the epic story from the first title and features another powerful dark lord returning to duty, this time more determined and bent on revenge than ever. In order to re-establish himself as ruler over the land, he needs the help of his wacky minions, which are always prepared to give their life in order to please him. However, this time around they are also a bit more resourceful and they can lend a huge helping hand over the course of the game, or even take care of everything by themselves.
As far as the story is concerned, it aims to blend in a fantasy setting with tales from the great Roman Empire, so the result should be as interesting and funny as the action itself. The overlord might look almost identical to the one from the previous episode, but it is actually an entirely different one, although his goals are more or less the same. Over the course of the plot, you'll get to participate in a variety of cruel and humorous quests, ranging from actual seal clubbing, to burning down villages and many other hilarious endeavors.
One of the major concerns regarding the first title was the fact that the minion control was slightly sloppy and unpolished, since they could get stuck in the environment. To fix it, the developers heavily refined the system, thus making it extremely reliable and easy-to-use. The minions themselves received an upgrade as well, since they can now mount wolves into battle, which increases their damage and speed. Obviously, a horde of funky gremlins riding wolves and attacking a pack of baby seals is about as hilarious as it can get.
From a technical standpoint, a great deal of progress can be observed when it comes to the graphics engine, since the textures are much smoother, which has a great impact on the environment itself. On the other hand, the same linearity problem haunts this installment as well, not to mention the fact that the settlements and the landscapes are very tight and restrictive, with plenty of invisible walls and impassable terrain blocking access to basically anything but the main road.
If you were a fan of the first release, you'll definitely want to give Overlord 2 a try and enjoy the improvements it brings to the series. The story is better, the humor is blacker and everything moves just a bit smoother, enough to make the gameplay feel more natural and easy-to-grasp.
