Simulation games are designed to provide you with a realistic experience, regardless of whether it’s racing cars, farming, or managing entire cities. On the other hand, it’s quite the strain on the developers to design a convincing experience, especially when they have to take many factors into account. There are only a handful of games out there that managed to make people happy in this regard, so it’s difficult to get excited about such projects.

Outer Colony is a strategy game with an emphasis on the simulation aspect, in which you have to make sure everyone gets along together on weird planets. The infrastructure and the settlements themselves are up to you as well, so the game certainly doesn’t lack complexity. In fact, it can be a bit difficult to understand what needs to be done, especially in the demo at hand.

The game is also very cutting edge in terms of procedural generation and artificial intelligence, which means that every round should be a new experience. You can concentrate on a variety of aspects with every playthrough, especially when it comes to industries, resources and various other things that dictate how your colony evolves.

As mentioned before, it might be a bit difficult to understand the game at first, even after a couple of hours of gameplay. There are just too many options to juggle with, and the interface is not particularly helpful either. The guide included in the demo is a bit too short and to the point, but more tutorials are prolly going to be added in the full version.

The graphics are very simple to say the least, given the top-down perspective and the low-resolution tiles. However, there are some performance issues and hang-ups that get on your nerves every now and again, even if you play with small words. Naturally, this is still barely a beta version at this point, but a lot of work is needed to get rid of all the issues.

Outer Colony is a bit too rough around the edges at this point, but there’s a lot of potential here, and the developers need your support in order to get the project out on the market. You can do your part by participating in the game’s Kickstarter campaign.
