Any type of game can benefit from a better atmosphere, not just horror games or RPGs. A great atmosphere can also help people remember their adventures much more fondly, but it’s pretty difficult to get everything right. In fact, many different elements work together in order to create the atmosphere, including the graphics, the music, and the level design itself.
Once Upon a Coma is a 2D action-adventure game that drops you into a pretty dark world while challenging you to solve puzzles, battle enemies and explore the stages. The game takes its inspiration from a variety of other titles, but at the end of the day it feels pretty original, probably because of its interesting art style and the great atmosphere created by the soundtrack and the level design.
You play the role of a boy by the name of Pete, who wakes up from a coma one day only to find out that everything has gone wrong. Not only is his sister missing, but it would appear that the adults around him are extremely violent for some reason. Hence, he goes on a quest to rescue his sister, and he has a variety of obstacles to overcome in order to achieve his mission.
Pete has a barber’s blade as a weapon, so the fights are pretty fierce. Sometimes you are forced to avoid enemy contact, on the other hand, given the fact that they can be pretty tough. Platforming is a part of the adventure as well, not to mention the puzzles you have to figure out in order to unlock certain secrets. It’s a great way to make gamers feel immersed, especially since the gameplay doesn’t get too repetitive.
As far as the graphics are concerned, the colors are very enjoyable, especially when things get darker and creepier. The level design is where the game shines at its brightest, however, because you truly feel like you are part of a different world while playing. The soundtrack helps a lot with the atmosphere too, even if the demo does not feature too many tracks at the moment.
In the end, Once Upon a Coma is very nicely executed, and it should be a really nice adventure once it’s out there in its final form. At the moment, you can have a bit of fun with the demo and see whether it has what you are looking for.
