Video games usually express a lot through graphics and music, which is why they are considered art, at least some of them. However, certain genres rely a lot more on the story and the writing instead of the visual part, such is the case with adventure or role-playing games. In fact, sometimes all you need is the text itself in order to be entirely immersed into a different world.

  Omina Mortis is an interesting experiment that provides you with the chance to be a part of a different world for a while and be in charge of the story at every step. The game is mostly text-based, although there is artwork in there as well, even if most of it is hand-drawn and obviously static. Thankfully, the joy comes from being able to control the story by making decisions during key points in the plot.   The whole thing takes place in a dark medieval world with gothic influences, as well as a lot of symbolism that keeps things interesting and somewhat foggy. In essence, the action revolves around a land called the Forgotten Kingdom, which is where you must unravel a dark mystery that involves demons and other undesirable creatures.

One thing some players may not appreciate is the fact that every scene is presented using two entire pages of text, which is not broken down into single paragraphs or anything of the sort. Hence, the reading material is quite serious and tiring sometimes, but it depends on your attitude toward the subject. It’s to be expected in a text-based RPG, so you can hardly call yourself surprised.   The choices you make affect the plot development in one way or another, but the demo at hand is way too short to see this in action. We can only hope that the full game is going to feature everything the developer promises, especially in terms of story and the routes you can take to reach an ending. Exploration should be quite exciting too, depending on whether you are a fan of medieval castles.

In the end, Omina Mortis won’t appeal to everyone, that’s a certainty, but at least it has what it takes to keep the fans of the genre engaged. Hence, there’s certainly potential here, so we can only hope that the full game is going to deliver on its promises.
