Driving on the road can be tons of fun, but there are quite a few other places a car can be utilized to put your skills to the test. Off-road vehicles have evolved a lot over the last few decades, since they are now able to mix performance with comfort. Thus, there’s no need to be uncomfortable while climbing a hill now, not to mention the fact that you can go back on the road in style.

Offroad Showdown is an interesting sim that allows you to have fun in a variety of challenging environments and do your best to accomplish certain objectives. The game is not exactly done at the moment, but it features enough good ideas to be worth following. The gameplay is quite polished even in this early version, especially when it comes to the driving experience.

To begin with, there’s one vehicle that is usable at the moment, but at least you can customize it in a few ways. Hence, there are a couple of components that can be upgraded if you have enough cash, such as the engine, the springs or the wheels. Obviously, these upgrades can be felt during the missions, and some of them actually make your job easier.

Each mission has a unique goal you have to accomplish, such as climbing to a certain altitude, or making it to a checkpoint on the other side of the map. In fact, the maps themselves are quite challenging, given the fact that you have to deal with ice, rock and mud. More challenges are expected in the full version, so it should be quite the ride when the whole thing is done.

There are some issues as well, on the other hand, such as the camera. You can only switch between a few different angles, and none of them are particularly helpful sometimes. It would be nice to have some sort of free camera that can be moved and panned as you wish. Thankfully, the graphics are decent, and you won’t need new components either to enjoy them.

When it’s all said and done, Offroad Showdown is actually a very polished game, given the fact that it’s a small indie production. Hence it features a diverse gameplay, believable physics and nice graphics, which is more than enough to keep you engaged. You can support the developers by voting for the game on Steam Greenlight.
