Combat is an essential part of gaming, regardless of whether it’s a first-person shooter, a MOBA or an RPG. In essence, combat is what allows players to feel like they are making progress, because characters usually get stronger over the course of the game. However, it’s important for the combat mechanics to be as enjoyable as possible, otherwise the action turns into a chore.
No Mercy is a project that aims to provide you with fast-paced combat, a rich world to explore, as well as quite the challenge when it comes to boss fights. Button mashing your number one activity throughout the game, but that doesn’t mean you can disregard strategy entirely. In fact, you have to work with another character in order to overcome the obstacles, so the action is not as straightforward as it sounds.
The story deals with the usual chaos and darkness forces that try to take over everything, except that two brave heroes decide to take the fight to them. More is going to be revealed in the full game, because the demo at hand is not exactly big on storytelling, except for the short cutscenes that explain the plot and introduce you to the main characters.
As you might expect, a gamepad is recommended to get the most out of the game, especially since the action can be a bit too fast-paced for a keyboard. Even so, you are allowed to use whatever you wish, so gamepads are certainly not a requirement. As for the combat, everything appears to be very polished at this point, although the movement is a bit disorienting sometimes.
Lastly, the graphics deserve a mention as well, because it’s nice to see hand-drawn artwork nowadays when every game features recycled Unity assets. The environments are a tad repetitive at the moment, on the other hand, mainly because you cannot see too much except for the road and the occasional monster. The game is still in a very early development phase, however, so it’s to be expected.
In the end, No Mercy is worth keeping an eye on, because it appears to have all the right elements to provide you with a good time, even if it has a few interface and visual issues at this point. Hence, you can support the developers by participating in the game’s Kickstarter campaign.
