Sometimes, memories can feel very real and take your mind to long-forgotten places. Just like in the madeleine story, the smallest events can trigger a waterfall of memories, maybe even enough to better understand your past. Although the concept is rather difficult to approach in a video game, what better way to try it out than in a point-and-click adventure game?
Night Train is a puzzle game with point-and-click adventure elements, featuring a compelling story and a unique way of presenting it, using clever artwork and attractive puzzles. However, the gameplay mechanics are about as straightforward as they can be for the genre, meaning that all you have to do is click on stuff and try to figure out how everything pieces together.
The story talks about a girl named Anna as she recalls her childhood. Since her dad was a station master, she used to live near the station, which meant that she heard every train that passed by. Naturally, a passion for trains was born, which made Anna desire to see where these wondrous machines went and what places they saw. Over the course of the plot, more is revealed and you can explore a variety of environments as you join her on this journey.
In order to come up with solutions to the puzzles you are presented with, you usually just have to pay attention to the clues that are spread around the environment. Most of the time, the answers are right in front of you, although it takes a bit of concentration to spot them. Not all the puzzles are as simple as that, but you won’t have to recur to cheats in order to finish the game.
Another aspect that truly impresses about the game is the attention to detail when it comes to the graphics and the level design, because you can truly let yourself get lost in the story. Naturally, everything is pre-rendered, or hand drawn, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t look excellent. The narration is spoken and there’s a soothing soundtrack playing in the background.
All things considered, Night Train is definitely an experience worth having if you do not mind the rather slow pace and the lack of explosions. The story is nice, the atmosphere is excellent, and the graphics are good enough to properly convey the right feelings, so there’s nothing to lose by giving it a try.
