Night Lights Demo

If often feels like there aren’t a lot of ways for developers to create original puzzle games, right until someone comes up with a concept that will have you saying “Why didn’t I think of that?”

Night Lights is a clever 2D puzzle platformer that requires you to use light sources to your advantage, more specifically their effects on shadow objects, which can be altered or hidden completely if you throw a few photons their way.

Most objects are not affected in any way if you shine a light on them, but some will change their shape or disappear altogether, opening up new paths for you to explore. Many of the lights can be manipulated, so you can point them in any direction and turn them on or off.

The puzzles you need to solve in this demo require you to activate one or more switches in order to progress to the next level. To achieve this, you will need to move blocks, play around with the light sources and collect crystals that activate certain mechanisms.

While this is just an early demo of the game, it certainly doesn’t feel like it. Granted, only a few levels are available, but these could be put in the finished game with no alterations. The mechanics are sound, and controls feel great, regardless of whether you are using a gamepad or keyboard.

I really love the game’s simple visual style, and the contrast between the orange lights and dark blue background looks amazing. Even the playable character, in all his squareness, looks cute as a button.

Sadly, this short demo isn’t going to keep you entertained for very long. You should be able to finish it in about fifteen minutes, but it does a very good job of showcasing the basic gameplay mechanics.

However, you should be pleased to learn that the game has been Greenlit on Steam, so watch out for the upcoming release of the full version. Also, do not hesitate to back Night Lights on Indiegogo to support the development process.
