When it comes to video games, it doesn’t really matter what you play with, as long as the experience is fun and the gameplay addictive. Hence, the main characters in some of the most famous franchises have nothing to do with reality and they range from lightning-fast hedgehogs, to Italian plumbers and androids trying to save the galaxy from aliens.
Nigel's Adventure is an arcade platformer in which you play the role of a worm, one that’s capable of waging total war against his archenemy. Even if he has to crawl everywhere and deal with the inconvenience of not having any legs, Nigel is quite inventive, and he takes advantage of technology to make up for his defects.
In essence, the story is not very important, but it gives you a reason to keep going and the cutscenes are pretty funny. Hence, everything starts when Roger, Nigel’s worst enemy, forms an army of robots and other worms in an attempt to take over the world. Obviously, your role is to capture Roger and put an end to his evil plan, although that’s easier said than done.
Nigel is not entirely helpless throughout the adventure. In fact, he can use a gun to shoot his enemies down, as well as a jetpack to reach higher platforms and perform longer jumps. Obviously, the enemies have weapons as well, although they are rather predictable and you can easily pick up on their patterns after a bit of trial and error. Other than that, the worm must jump and try not to fall into the numerous traps littering the way.
As far as the graphics are concerned, the visual quality is not exactly state-of-the-art. In fact, the sprites and the textures look very cheap and repetitive. Thankfully, they do not have too much of an effect on the overall experience. The sound is not amazing either, but then again, it is fairly easy to ignore this element as well, as long as you are having fun.
All things considered, Nigel's Adventure is much better than you would expect, especially when you first glance at the graphics. Hence, if you are up for a challenge and you do not mind the sketchy artwork, this can provide you with quite a bit of entertainment.
