Adventure games do not seem to get too much attention lately, especially since players are no longer interested in spending a few hours trying to figure out how to open a door. Instead, it is much more common to break the door down using massive weapons, or maybe some kind of magic spell, for diversity.
Nibiru: Age of Secrets, on the other hand, does not make it easy on you in any way and aims to emulate the golden era of the point-and-click adventure games, although with a heavily improved 3D graphic engine to replace most of the static scenery. The game was developed by the same studio that created Black Mirror as well, which is a genre classic with a pretty high difficulty level, even for experienced players.
In this installment, though, your role is to play as Martin Holan, which recommends himself as a linguistics and archaeology student that intends on examining a tunnel dating back to the World War II. This tunnel has been recently discovered while a highway was being built in Bohemia and the request for you to examine it comes from your uncle. Naturally, someone dies and things go south pretty fast, leaving you with a fascinating story about the Nazis, the Mayan civilization and secrets that should have remained buried forever.
As with every other adventure game, in order to move the story onward, you have to solve a variety of puzzles and find the answer to a few riddles, all of which become more and more difficult as you advance further into the game. Although most of the puzzles can be solved by combining items from your inventory and paying attention to the dialog, there are some a bit more tricky, which require some time to figure out.
While you are thinking, though, you can admire the stunning visual appearance of the game, thanks to the potent graphic engine and the multitude of special effects, which even enable weather fluctuation, including rain and fog. Voice acting has been recorded for the entire dialog, in order to provide you with an even more realistic experience and help you immerse into the game's atmosphere.
Nibiru: Age of Secrets is definitely worth the playthrough, thanks to well-written story, sturdy characters and the amazing puzzles that put your mind to work. Even if such titles are not very common at all lately, this one is proof that they are here to stay.
