Retro games are usually designed to be very simple in many regards, but currently technology allows developers to include many modern ideas as well. Hence, even if everything looks incredibly basic and old, you can explore procedurally-generated worlds and enjoy a variety of other neat elements that were impossible to implement back in the day.

NECROCOSMOS - There Is No God Up Here is an action-platformer in which you play the role of a soldier as he explores a vast galaxy in search of mysteries and better equipment. The game’s main feature is the fact that it allows you to explore planets as you desire, not to mention the fact that you can also tackle a variety of puzzles along the way and collect better equipment for your character.

The game borrows many elements from Metroid and Castlevania, which means that the levels are open to exploration as you see fit. Sometimes you can access interesting zones by jumping or climbing, while other times you have to destroy walls in order to get to your destination. The planets in question are not randomly generated, but they are certainly detailed and quite expansive.

Jumping from one planet to the other is not automatic, since you have to engage in a shoot ‘em up mini-game in order to avoid obstacles. In fact, this mini-game is very addictive and nicely designed as well. However, most of your time is spent investigating mysteries and dealing with enemies, and you also get to acquire better gear for your character while doing so.

Although the maps are not randomly generated, the planet configuration is, so the galaxy map is always different whenever you start a new game. Thus, the journey changes with every playthrough, which should make the game easier to enjoy multiple times. As far as the graphics are concerned, the 8-bit style is appropriate in this case, and the artwork is not nearly as ugly as you might imagine.

NECROCOSMOS - There Is No God Up Here might be up to something here, even if it’s too early to say at this point. Hence, the exploration is definitely great, and so are the gameplay mechanics, so you can support the developers by participating in their Kickstarter campaign.
