Being a paramedic or any other kind of emergency rescuer takes a lot of courage, not to mention a strong stomach. However, it’s also a rewarding job if you manage to save a few people, because there’s nothing better than being there for someone who needs help. There are ways to make the job even more exciting, on the other hand, and it involves ghosts and various other apparitions.

NDE Rescue is a unique puzzle game played from a top-down perspective, in which your goal is to navigate dangerous levels and make your way to people who are on their way to the other world because of a toxic leak of some kind. Your job is to save them by protecting their spirit and bringing them back from the dead, while also steering clear of hostile ghosts and other monsters.

As such, the story puts you in a secret facility somewhere and has you dealing with a toxic leak of some kind. You get to choose one of three possible rescuers to play as, and each one of them has special attacks that can be used to defeat enemies. Speaking of which, the levels are crawling with monsters as well, which are actually people who got infected before you got there.

Whenever you manage to retrieve someone’s soul, it also comes with a code that you must remember and then enter it into the nearest computer. The same computers can also be used to unlock doors and activate various other mechanisms, although you need specific keys in order to deal with colored doors. Thus, level navigation is a puzzle in itself, which adds even more excitement to the gameplay.

The graphics are nothing to write home about, but they are not horrible either, at least not when it comes to textures and special effects. On the other hand, the level design is a tad repetitive sometimes, and the camera angle is very awkward at first. You get used to it after a while, but it would be nice to be able to rotate the view and get a better look in certain situations.

NDE Rescue is not quite there yet, but it certainly has the potential to attract a decent crowd if the gameplay is polished in the meantime and the camera angle is fixed. Hence, the puzzles are pretty exciting and challenging, and the overall concept is unique.
