Some of the most common things to see in a horror game are evil spirits, mainly because everyone is already familiar with what they do and they do not require too many explanations in terms of writing. Naturally, this formula gets repetitive and boring in record time, but the writers can still make the subject sound interesting if they add a bit of originality when it comes to the origin of the spirits in question.

Mystery Tales: Dangerous Desires is a casual adventure game with hidden object mechanics, in which you have to solve puzzles in order to unravel a mystery. The way you go about solving the case is pretty straightforward as well, since you follow a strict path throughout the story. Thus, it’s all about figuring out the solution to all the riddles that stand in your way, with a few plot twists here and there.

Speaking of which, the story revolves around a museum that unveils an exhibition regarding the Black Plague, and the owner of that museum is an old friend of the main character. Naturally, everything goes wrong when a malevolent spirit starts messing with the museum, and it’s your job to figure out what the spirit wants in order to save your friend’s exhibition and keep everyone safe.

As for the gameplay itself, there’s not a lot of freedom involved, since your goal is to examine every scene for useful objects and use them in order to move on to the next scene. Most items can only be used once, however, since your character has the habit of throwing useful tools after using them for some reason. The actual puzzles require you to figure out patterns and apply them over and over again, which is not that exciting.

Since you are dealing with evil spirits, the atmosphere is pretty important, and every scene is designed to be fairly creepy. The level design is actually pretty nice, even if you are not allowed to explore the scenes at all. The artwork is very colorful and detailed, and there’s even voice acting to go along with the dialog and the occasional cutscene.

In the end, it’s quite obvious that Mystery Tales: Dangerous Desires does not try to come up with new ideas, which is true for both the story and the gameplay mechanics. Thus, the fans won’t find anything new here, but the adventure as a whole can be pleasant if you lower your expectations.
