Innovative combat systems are rare nowadays, mainly because there already are a few good ones out there, and gamers expect something similar from new titles as well. Hence, developers really need to convince players that their new invention is worth the trouble, otherwise everyone complains about having to learn new things when the classic mechanics worked so well anyway.

Mysterious Realms RPG is a roguelike RPG that aims to introduce you to a new combat system, which actually combines a few already available ideas into one. However, the rest of the game is pretty straightforward from a gameplay point of view, mainly because all you have to do is walk around dungeons and defeat enemies in order to get better gear and advance with the story.

Speaking of which, the demo does not feature too much of a narrative, since you are thrown directly into battle, depending on the chosen scenario. However, you do have a party under your control, and they must work together in order to overcome the enemy forces.The full game is bound to feature more lore and interesting story elements, especially since there’s a lot of potential at play.

As mentioned before, the combat system is where you can find a few new ideas. In short, you have a deck of colorful gems, each one of which can be used to deal damage to enemies during combat. Your heroes also have abilities, but you must use the correct gems in order to unlock them, which adds a neat layer of strategy on top of everything. The enemies do not work like that, on the other hand, which can be a bit annoying.

The rest of the mechanics are as classic as they can get, which means that you explore the maps, interact with items and engage in combat. There are some special events that require a dice roll in order to decide the outcome, but RNG can be a bit exasperating sometimes. As for the graphics, don’t expect anything too special, since the retro style is quite simplistic.

All things considered, Mysterious Realms RPG tries to change a few things here and there, but the combat system can be a bit too RNG sometimes, which is annoying. However, there’s a lot of room for improvement, so the final product might surprise us yet.
