Fewer and fewer games offer a linear experience nowadays, since most of them strive to provide the players with open worlds and the freedom to explore them at will. It’s obviously a lot harder to make the said worlds feel unique, especially if they are vast, since only big studios have the manpower to add convincing levels of detail when it comes to big maps.
My Time At Portia is an open world RPG that aims to let you enjoy yourself without setting too many limits, so it includes sandbox and exploration elements galore. The demo at hand is fairly short at the moment, but there’s clearly a lot of potential, especially if the developers manage to cram all of their interesting ideas into the final product. Hence, the main idea is that you create a character, level up and make a life for yourself in a colorful world full of possibilities. The character creation wizard is far from complex at this point, since there are not many things you can change, other than a few appearance settings. However, you can learn many skills and abilities along the way, including combat, gardening, and many others. The whole thing takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, but the environments are not as bleak as you might imagine. Instead, everything is very colorful and cozy, so you can have a great time throughout the adventure.
You receive a home as soon as you start a new game, and it’s possible to furnish it along the way, not to mention the fact that you can even plant a garden. Other activities are important as well, such as gathering resources, exploring the world and clearing dungeons. Crafting allows you to use ancient relics in order to build things and help your society advance. Speaking of which, every character in the world of Portia is different, and you can interact with them over the course of the game. Some provide you with missions, while others can even become romantic partners. It’s even possible to get married if you play your cards right, so there’s always a reason to keep playing and come back to the game regularly.
My Time At Portia has all the makings of a great game, so you should definitely keep an eye on it as the developers work on it. The open world mechanics and the RPG elements are neatly blended together, and it would seem like exploration is going to play a much more important role in the final version.
