Collect monsters, watch them grow in power and use them to defeat other trainers in this adventure game with RPG elements #Action game #Adventure game #Role-playing game #Monster #Role-play #Adventure
There are more Pokemon clones out there than one can count, especially nowadays when it’s fairly easy to develop a basic game using one of the many free engines. However, that’s not to say they are bad, especially if the creators put some work into their creation. Naturally, this is not always the case, which is why it’s difficult to find a clone worth playing.
Monster partner is an adventure game with role-playing elements, in which you have to capture monsters and use them in battles with other players. However, the mechanics are very clunky and unrefined, especially when it comes to the combat itself. It’s difficult to understand what you should be doing most of the time, even if there are guides and tutorials in the beginning.
As with Pokemon, your primary goal is to capture various creatures, which are called monsters here instead. After that, you must use them to battle other creatures and earn experience after every victory, which in turn allows your creatures to get stronger and learn new abilities. It sounds pretty neat in theory, but the awful interface and the annoying mechanics take their toll on the atmosphere.
Once a battle begins, it’s very difficult to understand when you should be doing something, or even if you are allowed to intervene. Everything is over in a few seconds, and there are no stats or reports to let you know what went wrong. Moving across the map is achieved using a text menu, and you can also visit shops to purchase better gear for you and your monsters.
As far as the graphics are concerned, they are far from impressive, but that’s usually not a problem in the genre. In this case, however, the claustrophobic environments get repetitive after mere minutes of game time, which is not desirable in a game that technically has no end. The music is not bad, but it can be a bit too out of place most of the time, not to mention repetitive.
All things considered, Monster partner could have achieved a lot more with the elements at its disposal, but the gameplay mechanics are just a mess. Hence, it doesn’t take long to understand that nothing about the game is particularly fun or engaging.
