After the automobile became widespread all throughout the globe and everyone was able to afford one, people started to modify their cars any way they liked. However, some were more interested in making them as big as possible, as well as capable of navigating the harshest of terrains without being hindered by mud, bumps in the road or puddles. Hence, the monster trucks were born.
Monster Truck Madness is a classic game that portrays the entertaining races featuring these amazing machines, while also allowing you to jump behind the wheel of one of them and compete for yourself. Taking into consideration that it was released quite a few years ago, you should not be surprised to know that the mechanics are very crude and rudimentary, but that shouldn't stop you from having a bit of fun with it.
In essence, the game puts a few different modes at your disposal, including drag, circuit and tournament. As you have already guessed, the first one requires you to push the trucks to the limit and basically go as fast as you can, while keeping the other cars in the rear view window. Circuits, however, require a bit more work and they do take a lot longer to complete, which should make for some interesting races.
As previously mentioned, realism is not exactly part of the equation, since technology did not allow for too much back then. Thus, it is quite easy to control the trucks even at top speed, which means that you can safely enter corners without using the brake pedal. Actually, you can go through the entire game without using the brake at all, although you can choose to give it a try from time to time if you want to make yourself feel better.
Visually, the title certainly looks outdated and blocky today, but it was very advanced for its time and it managed to turn a few heads its way back then. Considering the fact that it uses DirectX 2.0 to render the graphics, it is quite admirable to see that you get a dashboard view, spectators and even various decals and paint jobs on the other vehicles. Moreover, the maps are completely open, which means that you can always stray from the track itself and go for a stroll through the hills.
Monster Truck Madness must be appreciated for it it managed to do at the time of its release, even if it doesn't look like much today. The amount of content and the solid gameplay can still provide you with a few hours of fun, though, especially if you happen to be a fan of old games and you can appreciate its merit.
