Obliterate enemies and solve platforming puzzles in this minimalistic reproduction of the Half-Life universe. #First-person shooter #Adventure game #3d platformer #Half-life #Freeman #Platformer
Being a mute did not stop Gordon Freeman from becoming one of the most iconic protagonists in video game history, although one could argue that it’s because Half-Life itself made him famous, not vice-versa. Countless first-person shooters have basically expanded on Valve’s ideas over the decades, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that developers are still paying tribute to the franchise.
Minimal Freeman is a retro-looking first-person shooter with puzzle and platformer mechanics, in which you play as Gordon Freeman through a series of environmental challenges. Although there’s the usual shooting and running around, you also have to deal with puzzles every now and again, not to mention the fact that you may have to put your jumping skills to the test.
There’s not much of a story at the moment, given the fact that the game is merely a prototype, but the whole thing clearly takes place in the Half-Life universe. Hence, you have to deal with the usual enemies, including the infamous headcrabs and zombies. Since the only way to recognize Gordon Freeman is by his crowbar, that too is included in the game, even if it’s a bit flatter in this case.
Given the fact that you are often required to jump over gaps or climb walls, the controls play a big part in the experience, and Minimal Freeman is a bit shaky in this regard. The protagonist feels a bit floaty most of the time, and there’s also a weird slip when you land after a jump. Hence, you might find yourself falling because of this, which is very frustrating to say the least, although you can probably learn to live with it.
You can also use a few environmental objects to your advantage, such as cubes that can be picked up and transformed into platforms that allow you to reach higher ledges. As for the graphics, the retro style goes very well with the theme of the game, and the enemies are very well represented using only a handful of pixels. It’s also worth mentioning that most of the sound effects are borrowed directly from Half-Life as well.
As long as no legal issues appear in the future, Minimal Freeman can evolve into a pretty enjoyable experience, especially if the developer adds a story and more gameplay elements. The controls could use some additional work as well.
