Minecraft is still going strong after so many years, which speaks volume in regards to its replayability and the gameplay quality. On top of that, the unique world created by Mojang is flexible enough for a wide variety of weird ideas, such as mods, skin packs, and even other games inspired by the Minecraft universe, including an entire series.
Minecraft: Story Mode is a series of adventure games designed by Telltale, in which you join a group of adventurers as they explore the Overworld in search of mysteries and treasure. The first episode is now available free of charge, which means that you can try it whenever you wish in order to see whether the gameplay is worth your time, and whether the rest of the episodes are worthy of your money.
In essence, the story begins when Jesse, the main character, leaves on a journey with his friends to visit EnderCon and maybe meet a few legendary heroes. However, things take a turn for the worse once they realize that a great terror is about to take over the world, and it’s their job to stop it. Hence, the core concept is not exactly original, but Telltale has a way to make everything look interesting.
As always, the most important aspect of the game is the fact that you are always making choices that affect the course of the story, because the plot evolves according to the path you have chosen for your character. Thus, you have the freedom to replay the experience and do things differently, thus opening new sides of the story and getting the most out of the game.
The graphics are designed to come as close to the original Minecraft as possible, so they’re all about cubes and square heads. This should please the fans of the game, given the fact that it helps with the atmosphere and it makes you feel like you are actually part of Overworld. Quality voice acting makes everything even better, not to mention the relaxing soundtrack.
All things considered, Telltale may have upset some fans with the episodic marketing, but Minecraft: Story Mode is still a very good game when it comes to story, voice acting and replay value. Thus, as long as you can get over the terrible financial choices, the game is definitely worth your time.
