Mega Man 8-bit Deathmatch Demo
An 8-bit multiplayer shooter based on the Mega Man universe, with a first-person perspective and a lot of readily available content #Mega Man deathmatch #Multiplayer shooter #Retro shooter #Mega Man #Shooter #Multiplayer
Many of the popular video game characters from the 2D era did not survive the transition to three dimensions too well, although others thrived in spite of it. Hence, while Mario and Prince of Persia embraced the change, Sonic and Mega Man were not that lucky, despite the repeated attempts. However, that doesn’t mean you cannot get something fun out of the franchise even now.
Mega Man 8-bit Deathmatch may be fully 3D, but you wouldn’t know that just from looking at it for a few seconds. Everything about it looks like it belongs on a SNES, although the first-person perspective kind of ruins the illusion. Despite that, the 8-bit color theme can still bring back a lot of good memories, even if it might cause some sore eyes on today’s widescreen computer monitors.
The game is a fast-paced multiplayer shooter as well, which means that there are no platforming elements to talk about, only frags and enemies. Using a variety of weapon mods and all the ammo you can find around the levels, you must kill everyone who’s not on your team and sometimes accomplish some other objectives as well, such as capturing the enemy flag.
Speaking of which, there are some more modes you can try out, depending on how many people are online on the server and how you want the action to evolve. The Capture the Flag mode is about as classic and straightforward as it can be, but there is also the Team Deathmatch, which features two teams trying to annihilate each other in a timely fashion, until a certain score is reached by one of them.
Thankfully, the game also comes with a separate server utility which can be used to host dedicated servers. This way, you can maintain public servers and control everything about them without having to go into the game yourself, although you have that possibility as well. Obviously, the 8-bit graphics and the low system requirements do not put too much of a strain on your computer, even if 16 people join the server at the same time.
Mega Man 8-bit Deathmatch does manage to be quite fun and addictive, especially if you were a fan of the franchise and you do not mind the ridiculous graphics. A lot of work went into designing the environments and you can choose between a great variety of characters to play as.
