Medium Detective: Fright from the Past is a hidden object adventure game in which you play the role of a detective who’s trying to solve a tough case involving a series of murders. Things are that much more interesting when you consider the fact that you also possess a few special abilities, given the fact that you are a medium as well. The main villain is a bit unusual too.

The whole thing starts when you are called to examine a crime scene and uncover the truth about what happened by gathering the clues left behind by the killer. Things get more convoluted after that, since it would appear that the criminal also has special abilities. Thus, you have to find a way to stop the Man of Shadows before he adds more victims to his name.

The gameplay mechanics are nothing out of the ordinary, except of course for the paranormal sequences where you have to make use of your medium abilities in order to advance the story. Hence, most of your time is spent clicking on things and investigating every scene for useful objects, most of which are then used to solve puzzles. The riddles are not particularly tough, but they can be quite time-consuming sometimes.

Everything is pretty ordinary in the graphics department as well, but the artists have done their job well, which means that every scene is detailed and quite moody. There’s the occasional cutscene in there too, but don’t expect too much in this regard, given the basic techniques used for animations. However, the voice acting is pretty decent, and so are the sound effects associated with various actions.

In spite of the story full of cliches, Medium Detective: Fright from the Past can provide you with a few hours of fun if you are in the mood for some classic supernatural tropes.
