Fan-made video games are not spectacular most of the time, but every now and again someone manages to create something that surpasses the achievement of the original developers. Passion is a great motivator, and when no time limits are pressing on you, it is much easier to come up with great ideas and improve on someone else’s work.
MediEvil Decay is an indie production that aims to recreate the atmosphere of the original MediEvil series and provide the other fans with some more material. The game is poorly made and it features frustrating mechanics in most cases, but since this is merely a demo, it’s to be expected. Even so, you might have a very hard time experiencing any fun with the game, especially if you are used to the finer things.
To begin with, there’s barely any story or information on what goes on in the background. Hence, although you play with a character that looks a lot like the one from the original franchise, it still might not be him. Since he comes equipped with a sword and a shield, your main purpose is to use the two in order to overcome the enemies littering the way to wherever you happen to be going.
Despite the fact that you may be able to get past the lack of story and character development, the atrocious gameplay mechanics make it very difficult to enjoy the experience. The combat system is glitchy and it takes luck to hit the desired target, while the act of jumping can get you stuck in the environment. Some sections can even prove to be impossible to pass unless you know exactly where to jump and how.
Things remain just as disappointing in the graphics department as well, starting from the awful backgrounds, all the way to the hilarious animations. The only satisfactory element in the game is the sound, which although has plenty of flaws as well, some effects sound pretty nice in combination with what happens on the screen at the same time.
All things considered, MediEvil Decay is certainly bad, but it can be transformed into a better game with enough effort and dedication. Hence, unless you truly are a huge MediEvil fan, there are much better alternatives out there.
