Not many video game franchises manage to go down in history, regardless of how much work goes into them or what subjects they approach. However, every now and again something truly special hits the market, something that inspires other developers to try harder and follow the example. The Mafia series is one of the most iconic examples in the industry, especially since it managed to blend a great story with engaging gameplay mechanics and a memorable atmosphere.
Mafia III is the latest installment in the series, and it comes after quite a long break, which should mean that the developers had time to polish everything to a shine and make sure that everything turns out as planned. It’s more or less the same formula as in the previous two episodes, except that the time period is different, and of course so is the story and the characters that are part of it.
In short, you play the role of a Lincoln Claw, a black Vietnam veteran who is trying to shake off a dark past. However, things prove to be a bit more difficult than he anticipated, given the fact that he is part of the black mob, which is notoriously difficult to get out of. One thing leads to another and more violence stacks on top of his past deeds, although there’s still hope if you manage to make the right decisions.
The events in the game take place in the year 1968, so everything is designed to look as close to that period as possible, including the architecture, the cars and the people themselves. It’s also worth noting that there’s a lot of racism involved, and it was necessary to include this ugly part as well in order to accurately depict that era. However, you can choose to focus on other things instead, such as the gorgeous city and the ability to explore it at your own will.
The graphics are worthy of a mention as well, because everything is incredibly detailed and nicely designed to be in tune with the overall atmosphere. On top of that, the animations are smooth and natural, making the whole thing feel realistic and highly immersive. The sound design is amazing too, including the soundtrack and the sound effects for everything from gunshots to car engines.
In the end, Mafia III is a very polished game that features a wonderful story, engaging gameplay mechanics and amazing graphics. One of the most common things people complain about, on the other hand, is the fact that the missions are very repetitive. It’s difficult to get over it, but if you somehow manage to concentrate on the story as a whole and the atmosphere of the 1960s, then you can still have a great time playing the game.
