Magic is a pretty common theme in fantasy games, especially since it allows developers to come up with all sorts of gameplay mechanics based on it. Not only that, but it’s also easy to get away with ludicrous ideas if magic is involved, which is great from a creative point of view. Besides RPGs, platformers have a lot to gain from this as well.

Mable & The Wood is a pretty neat 2D platformer with a basic idea at its core: use magic to fly around the levels and change shapes to overcome a variety of obstacles. It sounds pretty regular in theory, but the gameplay is very different from most other platformers out there. While it could use a bit of polishing at the moment, the game is definitely on the right track.

The story is mighty intriguing as well, although there’s not much information on it right now. In short, you play the role of a girl trying to save the world from evil. She can use magic, which is her primary method of dealing with enemies and navigating treacherous environments. However, the use of magic drains the world of color, and she must also kill innocent animals of the forest in order to replenish her powers.

Speaking of which, there are a couple of ways you can deal with enemies, depending on the situation. As an example, you can use the sword tether to cut them to pieces, drop the sword on them, or use a few other creative methods. It can be quite difficult to get the hang of it at first, especially since you need fast reaction times, but it’s definitely not impossible.

To be in tune with the retro trend that has been going around for a while, Mable & The Wood features colorful pixel graphics, and it’s a joy to explore the game world because of it. The sprites are smooth as well, as are the various particle effects. Naturally, you get to see the shift to monochrome when you use magic, which is great.

In the end, Mable & The Wood truly has the potential to become a hit with the gaming community, especially since it features such a great set of gameplay mechanics.
