Dreams are sometimes powerful enough to change people’s lives, which is why everyone likes to dream. However, it’s pretty difficult to create a proper dream experience in movies and video games, mainly because they usually appear too clear and concise. On the other hand, you can add a few other ideas into the mix and create a more believable experience.
Lotia is a top-down RPG in which you are in command of a privateer crew that sails the oceans of the world in order to fight the good fight. The mechanics are about as classic as they can get in the genre, given the fact that all you have to do is walk around the maps and handle the occasional encounter with the enemy. However, at least the game world is fairly interesting and original.
The story revolves around Reef O’Meara and his crew, who are fighting on behalf of the dreamers. Since an evil organization by the name of Dominion is trying to destroy them, the dreamers have to protect their legacy and survive the war with a variety of weird creatures. It’s a fairly confusing plot at first, but it gets easier to understand if you take the time to read every bit of text and dialog.
Although you are free to move around the map using the keyboard when you are out exploring, the combat takes place in turns, so you have plenty of time to choose the best approach for every encounter. You can attack the enemies, use special abilities, or even search through your inventory for an item or a potion that might come in handy. Naturally, characters get stronger as they manage to win fights and gain experience.
Lastly, the graphics are nothing to write home about, given the fact that this is RPG Maker all over again, with the same isometric views and repetitive tiles. On the other hand, at least this one comes with a variety of original tiles, and some of the landscapes are actually quite dreamy. Even so, it’s difficult to get in the proper mood when the maps are so small and repetitive.
Lotia might be a tad too confusing at first, not to mention the fact that it doesn’t bring anything new to the genre, but it can also be fairly intriguing. At least the idea is pretty original and enjoyable.
