Certain games manage to create a name for themselves so strong that it lasts for decades, as it the case with many franchises that exist today. Zelda, Super Mario or The Elder Scrolls, they all have their unique charm, and gamers expect a certain atmosphere and experience whenever they try a new release or come in contact with those universes.
Light Fairytale is a 3D RPG that borrows most of its ideas from games like Final Fantasy, including the gameplay and the turn-based combat mechanics. In fact, the game world itself is similar to that from Square Enix’s hit series, but the characters are different, and so is the story, more or less. Even so, it’s nice to see some old ideas brought back using modern technology.
The story takes place in a fictional underground world, which also happens to be dying for some reason. On top of that, it is also ruled by a nasty empire that doesn’t like to provide its citizens with too much freedom, or anything at all for that matter. Naturally, unease is brewing throughout the city, and you can probably guess where the plot is going from the first few minutes of gameplay.
If you haven’t played classic JRPGs, Light Fairytale might be a bit difficult to get familiar with in terms of gameplay and mechanics, because it’s a tad different from western titles. In essence, there are fixed camera angles that allow you to view a portion of the map, and you are free to move about. On the other hand, it’s a pretty linear concept, because there are only a couple of options.
It’s great when it comes to overall views of the city, but it lacks the personality of first-person RPGs, or the intricate beauty of isometric ones. Even so, it looks great for a prototype, that’s for sure. The combat is pretty standard as well, in the sense that each character gets his or her turn to make a move, and there are all sorts of special abilities you can make use of, not to mention items.
In the end, Light Fairytale is not quite there yet, but it has the potential to become a great game if the developer gets the necessary resources. Hence, you can support the project by backing it on Kickstarter, or by voting for the game on Steam Greenlight.
