There are many famous video games franchises still being developed nowadays, even if they originate in a different era. Hence, the Super Mario series is as lively today as it was two decades ago, as is the Final Fantasy franchise. However, others remain a relic from the past, whether because the studios that produced them dissolved in the meantime, or just because sequels were never planned.
Legend of Zelda - Cubed in Time is a fan-made project that is obviously based on the famous RPG series developed by Nintendo and various other studios throughout time. However, it is an amateur attempt, so you should not expect too much for it. In essence, it is a very basic platformer in which you have to reach the end of the levels and pass through the portal.
There is no storyline whatsoever, which is rather weird for a game that supposedly tries to emulate one of the most story-rich series out there. However, maybe platformers based on skill do not really need a top-shelf plot to make the desired impression. On the other hand, the rest of the gameplay is not good enough to be worth the trouble, regardless of how much of a Zelda fan you might be.
The levels are unimaginably simple and straightforward, which means that they pose no challenge to anyone, regardless of any previous experience with platformers. All you have to do is jump from block to block and reach the portal at the end, level after level. There are no coins to collect and nothing else to do, so you will probably get bored rather quickly.
In case you resist the boredom, the controls and the general gameplay mechanics can ruin the experience in a hurry as well. Link can get stuck in the environment and the jump mechanics are very awkward and slow, which makes progress painful. The graphics cannot get any simpler than they are and they are not in any way pretty or artistic.
All things considered, Legend of Zelda - Cubed in Time is obviously not a masterpiece, but it was never intended to be one anyway. Hence, if you do not go into the game with great expectations, you shouldn’t be too disappointed.
