Putting a different spin on an idea can be the perfect way to get a lot of people interested in your video game, even if it’s not necessarily an original concept. Even a different perspective can be the breakthrough you are looking for, although that approach is not always beneficial. Many have tried to create an enjoyable first-person RTS, but very few have managed to come up with a fun recipe.
Last Tech Defense is a first-person tower defense game with plenty of action to keep you busy and a bit of strategy to mix things up. Unfortunately, the actual gameplay is not as fun as it sounds in theory, mainly because it’s a bit too slow and unpolished, but the game is in active development, so things might change in the future. Even so, the game is fairly enjoyable in its current state as well.
To begin with, the goal of the game is to defend a piece of human technology in order to stand a chance against the machine uprising. Naturally, the robots are far stronger than people, but we can use this technology against them, at least if we can defend it from them. Thus, most of your time is spent killing robots and defending your position from invaders.
Although the game is supposed to be a first-person tower defense flick, there’s only one type of tower at the moment, while the rest of the units are what appear to be mech suits. They do not feel very different, on the other hand, so that’s a bit of a bummer. It’s also a bit disappointing that you do not have too many weapons or special abilities at your disposal.
Lastly, the graphics are nothing out of the ordinary either, especially when it comes to level design. Most of the maps look very similar, and it’s not much of an adventure to explore them, given the fact that most buildings look the same and not much thought went into the architecture. Even so, these issues could be ignored if the gameplay were a bit more engaging.
When it’s all said and done, Last Tech Defense is not too bad, but it lacks the fun factor most of the time, mainly because the gameplay is repetitive and unimpressive. The basic visual design takes its toll after a while as well.
