Role-playing games are usually designed to create a few memories for the players, mainly because it’s easier to remember something if you feel like you are in control of what happens with the story. RPGs feature entire parties of heroes sometimes, which means that you’ll also make a few friends along the way and maybe remember certain individuals years later.
La Solitudine is a top-down role-playing game designed with RPG Maker, in which your primary goal is to explore the world and solve puzzles. In fact, there are very few classic RPG elements involved, because most of your time is spent trying to find answers to various riddles. Hence, everyone should be able to enjoy the game, even if you are not a hardcore RPG fan.
The story is a bit disorienting and difficult to follow, even in the official description provided by the developers. As such, you play the role of a masked character who tries to discover his true identity and maybe remove his mask somehow. More details might emerge once the full game is out, but so far it’s pretty difficult to get excited about the story or any of the characters involved.
Since there’s not much combat involved, puzzles occupy the majority of your time, which is not at all a bad thing, at least not in general. In this case, on the other hand, the puzzles are pretty repetitive and annoying, not to mention seemingly pointless. Whether you have to answer a riddle to open a chest lock or pick up various items to use later on, there’s not much of a challenge, and certainly no joy if you manage to get the answers right.
As for the graphics, the game looks just like every other game designed with RPG Maker, which is not a surprise. Although the visual part doesn’t necessarily matter when the story or the gameplay is the main ingredient, neither of those are strong enough to distract you from the flat textures and repetitive tiles. Thus, it’s difficult to get excited about the adventure, especially when there’s not a lot to see along the way.
In the end, La Solitudine is quite clearly the first project for many of the people involved in it, which means that it comes with many flaws and annoyances. Hence, there are not many reasons to give this a try, but if you still feel like it, the developers could use your support on Steam Greenlight.
